On November 24, 2018, I bought my financially obtainable dream vehicle, a Jeep JKU Altitude Edition. At that time, I was planning on working from home as a software consultant, and the Jeep would be a grown-up toy. I had no idea that my life would radically change within a year of buying the Jeep.

As I write this, I reflect on these changes that include the loss of both inlaws, Covid 19, personal health issues, and a 60-minute commute to a new job. Aside from the commute, the new job has also affected my free time, and I’m no longer home at a reasonable hour, which forces me to perform typical weeknight activities on weekends.

As you can imagine, this new way of life eats into my outdoor activities and wallet.

I have come to realize that I need a practical vehicle that’s somewhat better on gas mileage better suited to driving in traffic filled with idiots and Darwin award candidates. Though I didn’t initially admit it, I also need a pickup truck.

February 19, 2022, I put a deposit on a 2022 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X Pickup.

I didn’t set out to buy a Nissan Frontier Pro-4X Pickup, and Nissan wasn’t even on my radar. I began my quest with the Subaru Outback Wilderness Edition but quickly shot down that idea. I then moved on to a Toyota Tacoma, which felt cramped and technologically outdated. Next up were the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon. Both GM products are bland and basic unless you are willing to spend a significant amount of money on upgrades. Ford was not an option because they treated me poorly with my first new vehicle, an F250, in 1985. Ford lost me as a customer for life.

While reading recent reviews of the previously mentioned vehicles, a few comments referenced the newly redesigned Nissan Frontier Pro-4X Pickup. I was immediately impressed by a quick google image search result of a Nissan Frontier Pro-4X Crew Cab Pickup painted Baja Storm Pearl. I headed off to the Nissan USA website for additional information. It didn’t take long for me to realize the reviews were correct. The Frontier Pro-4K is an amazingly equipped vehicle for the money. The reviews are great, the price is right, and I love the Baja Storm Pearl Color. My quest is over, or so I thought.

Buying a new vehicle in 2022 is hindered by supply chain issues and covid. I sent many emails to local dealers, and only one had a Frontier Pro-4K that was exactly what I wanted except for the color; they had a “Red Alert” red model available. I could live with red. As we headed to the dealer, an hour later, I received a call from my sales guy Brian. Brian informed me that the model I would see had just sold. I was disappointed, but we headed up for a test ride anyway.

The test ride was a pleasure, and the Frontier Pro-4K was everything I wanted and more. When we returned to the dealership, Brian informed me that they didn’t have any “Red Alerts” due any time soon, but they had a similarly equipped Baja Storm Pearl due in any day.

As I stated above February 19, 2022, I put a deposit on a 2022 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X Pickup, Crew Cab, Baja Storm Pearl. I should receive the Frontier by month’s end. I will start a new post with many pictures and eventually a review.

Will I miss the Jeep? You bet, but nothing is saying I won’t one day own another. I have also heard Toyota is monitoring the sales numbers for the new Ford Bronco. Toyota might bring back the FJ Cruiser with a retro look and modern technology if the Bronco is a success. Who knows, maybe there will be a second new vehicle in my future in a year or two.
