Broken Branch KOA Campground Review – Lincoln, Woodstock New Hampshire

My recent trip to hike to the Franconia Ridge Trail loop in the beautiful White Mountains of New Hampshire marked the first time I ever stayed at a KOA campground. This KOA in Lincoln/Woodstock “Broken Branch KOA” came from a recommendation by a fellow hiker who also talked me out of trying to hike the Presidential Trail. By the way I keep using Lincoln/Woodstock as the town because it shows up as both depending on what you read. For Waze users it’s Woodstock. The other reason I selected the KOA Kampground is because the place is very dog friendly and we needed that option for Erin’s dog Willow.

Anyhow this campground is minutes from the charming downtown Lincoln and one end of the amazing and stunningly beautiful Kancamagus Highway. For me this makes this campground a more appealing choice than the Littleton KOA.

Upon arriving I was greeted by a very pleasant staff that was eager to help. Check-in is at the store/gift shop. If you arrive early enough you can buy a hot pizza, cold coke and fresh popcorn. The nice lady who checked me in explained the campground and asked if I had questions about anything local. I felt welcome. She set me up in cabin K-7.

The Cabin

Cabin K-7 was located in the back left corner of the campground and in my opinion the pick of the cabin locations. Upon arriving at my site I was struck with how clean everything was, not a single remnant of a previous guest. There was not even ashes in the firepit.

The outside of the cabin is cute, there’s a wooden two person swing on every porch. The area around the cabin features a fire pit, running water, picnic table and enough parking for two vehicles.

Opening the door was a pleasant surprise. The interior was immaculately clean and super cute. There’s plenty of electrical outlets, a refrigerator, storage shelves, a full size bed, bunk beds, a bench, ceiling fan with lights, garbage can, broom and a mouse trap under the bed. Both ends of the cabin have large windows. The beds have vinyl covered mattresses. I was very impressed.

I can’t personally attest to the comfort of the mattresses because I have a bad back and brought an Intex Deluxe Airbed for the bed and a Weinas Sleeping Pad with Pillow Inflatable Sleeping Mat Portable Hiking Mattress. On the second night Erin slept on the supplied mattress and felt it was comfortable. A six pack of Corona Light would make any mattress comfortable.

Showers & Bathrooms

One thing I have learned over the years is campground bathrooms and showers suck. Well I can’t say that any longer. The bathrooms and showers were some of the cleanest public facilities I have ever seen. I was shocked to put it mildly. I thought to myself ok the bathrooms are immaculate but I bet the showers will be cold. Well I’m here to report not only is there unlimited hot water but the water can get hotter than you probably want, I like it like that because I like an after hike shower to be long and really hot. I was once again impressed.

Campground Intangibles

The campground was neat and tidy. Towards evening there was firewood deliveries. I takes about three bundles to get through an evening. I can’t recall what the wood cost but it was slightly more expensive than what was available at roadside stands outside the campground. I didn’t mind paying extra to buy it at the site. These folks need to make a living.

Behind the campground is a stream and pond. I didn’t visit the pond. The campground was very peaceful even at night. In fact it seemed to go quiet at around 9pm. Erin and I called it a night at 10pm out of respect for the other campers.

As I mentioned in the beginning there’s a store on site, I guess you could call it a country store or general store. It’s well stocked with anything a camper might need. The pizza looked and smelled great.

Out back of the store is a game room. There is also a playground and other activities for kids

Dog Friendly

Not only is the park dog friendly but they have kennels and a dog park with some agility equipment. We didn’t take Willow but it sure points out the entire family is welcome here.

Location

As I stated earlier the campground is located minutes from downtown Lincoln. Yes there is a Dunkin Donuts, Mcdonald’s has an extensive dollar menu for breakfast which translates to $2 for a large coffee and a Sausage McMuffin. There’s some great restaurants like Common Man and stores like Life is Good, I frequented Price Chopper and for a great sandwich at a place the locals visit check out Wayne’s Market. Wayne’s Market is a Convenient Store, Sunoco gas station with a great deli. Nachos Mexican Grille is dog friendly

The scenery is beautiful at every turn and the campground is 15 minutes from Franconia Notch. What more can you ask for?
